 · There is a great deal of mis-information regarding Saginaw Manual Steering gearboxes around the internet, and in print magazine and DIY manuals. (Saginaw Division of GM) compounded the problem by poor word choice. Many GM manuals state to use “lube”. And then state gear oil and grease. The manual steering gear is filled at the factory with a water resistant grease. Seasonal change of this lubricant is unnecessary and the housing should not be drained. The steering gear lubricant level should be checked every 36, miles. Whenever required, additions should be made using a water resistant EP chassis lubricant. Check and fill. Joined . ·. Posts. I had adjusted the play in the box, and decided to check the lube through the hole when you remove one of the top plate screws. I got a recommendation from (I thought) a credible. BTW, manual steering boxes are lubed with 90 weight oil, not grease, although grease can be used it's not it's natural lubricant, I would use grease only if the seals could not keep the oil in (whatevere oil you decide to use) Augusto. A good grade of lithium based chassis (ball joint) grease was recommended by Saginaw engineers. There may be types of synthetic greases that have better high temperature and longer life characteristics available today. Lubricants with lower viscosities (more liquid) have a tendency to leak or weep past the pitman shaft and input shaft seals. The bolt is to then be reinstalled and the steering box topped off with 80W gear oil. From experience if you rebuild the gear box and fill it with oil, even with new seals and everything in perfect condition it will leak. If you drain the oil and fill it as specified above the leaks stop, the internal mechanisms get the lube that they need and the box works as it should.
